Tesla’s marketing team cuts and McDonald’s stillness: Your Marketing Week
At the end of every week, we look at the key stories, offering our view on what they mean for you and the industry. From Elon Musk sacking Tesla’s 40-strong marketing team to McDonald’s shining a light on the power of ‘stillness’, it’s been a busy week. Here is my take.
Over and out
When Elon Musk said he would “try a little advertising” last year ‘little’ was clearly the operative word.
The Tesla boss unceremoniously fired his entire 40-strong marketing team in the US this week. A marketing team that was only formed four months ago. A marketing team that barely had time to think about diagnosis or positioning or research let alone anything else. A marketing team that was seemingly doomed to fail from the start.
After Bloomberg shared the news of the marketing team’s demise on social media, Musk then added insult to injury by publicly branding the team’s advertising efforts “far too generic”.
