Just Eat names former John Lewis marketing boss managing director

Claire Pointon is set to take over as UK and Ireland managing director of Just Eat.

Just Eat Takeaway.com has appointed former John Lewis marketing lead, Claire Pointon, as managing director for the UK and Ireland.

She was chosen for the role based on her more than two decades of commercial experience in customer strategy, brand innovation and marketing, most recently at John Lewis, the company says.

Pointon stepped down from her role as customer director of John Lewis in February, three years after joining the business.

During her tenure, the retailer went through a number of strategic shifts, including the launch of value range Anyday, the retirement of the ‘Never Knowingly Undersold’ brand promise and its replacement with ‘For All Life’s Moments’, as well as the retailer’s continued digital transformation.

Before joining John Lewis she spent nearly six years at Dixons Carphone, culminating in her position as chief customer and commercial officer where she was responsible for Carphone Warehouse trading. Prior to this she was marketing and innovation director at Kerry Foods and held a number of roles at Deutsche Telekom.

Just Eat raises marketing spend by another £100m as it pursues profitabilityPointon takes over from Andrew Kenny, who joined Just Eat Takeaway.com’s management board as chief commercial officer last year.

She says she’s looking forward to leading the UK and Ireland on the “next phase of the journey” as there are now “more customers than ever looking for convenience and choice online”.

Just Eat reported underlying earnings of €19m (£16.7m) last year, up from a loss of €350m (£308m) in 2021, thanks in large part to its cost-cutting efforts. In the UK and Ireland, earnings hit €23m (£20.2m) from a losses of €107m (£94.2m) the year prior.

The online food delivery firm has also raised marketing investment significantly in recent years.
